Prof. Dr. Chaudhry Sikandar Hayat was born on September 10, 1942. He has an excellent academic and research carrier, as evidenced by the meritorious awards bestowed upon him, membership of the professional societies, technical and selection committees both at national and international levels. He has nearly 44 years of teching and research experience and has played a pivotal role in the advancement of Parasitology in particular and Veterinary Sciences in general. He earned degree of B.Sc. (A.H) in first class in 1962 from College of Animal Husbandry, Lahore, M.Sc. (Hons) in parasitology in 1965, M.S. in Veterinary Sciences in 1968 from Washington State University and Ph.D. in 1971 from Oklahoma State University, Post-Doctoral fellowships from USA and Egypt. Dr. Hayat received Silver Medal for standing first in the M.Sc (Hons), was selected for Ph.D. studies on merit scholarship in USA, received President’s Honor Award from Oklahoma State University and declared as the Best student of the year by Pakistan Students Association in USA.
Dr. Hayat Joined as a Research Assistant in 1962, appointed as Instructor in 1963 was selected as Lecturer in 1972, as Assistant Professor in 1977, as Associate Professor in 1983 and as professor in 1990 in the Department of Parasitology, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. He was promoted to BPS 21 as Meritorious professor during 2000. University Selection Board and Syndicate recommended him for promotion to Meritorious Professor BPS 22 and sent the case to the Chancellor during 2002. Dr. Hayat also served as Assistant Professor at the University of Garyounis, Libya on deputation from 1979 to 1983, as a visiting professor at the Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, USA. and and University of Cincinatti, USA. Dr. Hayat remained Chairman, Department of Parasitology, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad for about 18 years. Besides other administrative assignments, during his chairmanship, he established immunoparasitology laboratory, developed animal research facility, and revised and updated the postgraduate and undergraduate curricula. Dr. Hayat served as Dean Faculty of Veterinary Sciences from 1998-2002.
Dr. Hayat has supervised four Ph.D. and 19 M.Sc. scholars, published 153 research/popular articles, 70 abstracts in journals of national and international repute, and author of four books/monographs. He has completed four research project of high economic, animal and public health significance asPrincipal Investigator. He established Research Links with the American Universities like University of Cincinatti, Baylor College of Medicine Houston/University of Texas and Washington State University, U.S.A. Dr. Hayat through his eminent and applied researchers has provided effective parasitic control programs. His main area of research is veterinary Medical Parasitology and public health. In addition, Dr. Hayat has been the Chairman, Curricula Committee, University Grants Commission; Chairman, Scrutiny Committee for the postgraduate research projects, and has guided many dozen students as a member of their supervisory committees in parasitology and allied disciplines. Additionally, he has been Secretary, Editiorial Board, and currently Technical Consultant of Pakistan Veterinary Journal and Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences. Dr. Hayat is also member of the Executive Council and Chairman Educational and Curriculae Committee, Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council. Dr. Hayat was awarded Best University Teacher Award-2000 including Cash Award of Rs. 40,000,00 from University Grants Commission, Islamabad and Z.A. Hashmi University of Agriculture, Faisalabad in recognition of his meritorious services in teaching and research. Dr. Hayat received Star Laureate award 2001, Millenium Gold Medal from South Asra Publications and Life Time Achievements Award from University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore. Dr. Hayat was also awarded prestigious fellowship of Pakistan Academy of Medical Sciences.
Besides all above, Dr. Hayat has been a member of different statutory bodies like Faculty Board, Advanced Studies and Research Board, Academic Council, Selection Board, Syndicate and Senate of the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad as well as Gomal University, D.I.Khan, an expert of Board of Pakistan Medical Research Council and Punjab Public Service Commission for recruitment to gazetted posts and as a paper setter of many Universities. Dr. Hayat as a Principal developed Gomal College of Veterinary Sciences, Gomal University, D.I.Khan by providing complete infrastructure, lab. Facilities and teaching and lab. Staff. The College can now compete with any veterinary institution in the country.
